When people hear the words Judge Dredd most instantly think of the failed 1995 Sylvester Stallone film which was based off the infamous comic series. Hopefully the new reboot titled Dredd will help wipe the slate clean and give the character new life and meaning in the film world. The new film is being distributed by Lionsgate and helms Pete Travis as director. The film is scheduled for a September 21st release but has been keeping a very low profile for the most part. The most we have seen is a still frame here or there and we still have yet to see any footage of the film. Unfortunately we still don’t have footage for you, but we do have some great stills coming from the JDMN twitter feed.
From the stills alone we already get a sense that this will be a much darker and grittier film then the ’95 version which is a great and promising sign. Karl Urban play Judge Dredd in the film and from the close up shot, looks to really fit the role perfectly. We do know that unlike the other version, Dredd will not take his helmet off in the film just like he never removed it in the comic series either. Also with these stills we get to see his partner Judge Anderson, played by Olivia Thirlby, in action and also what appears to be performing an execution on someone.
If you are a bit unfamiliar with the series or characters, here is the official synopsis for the film:
Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. Peter Travis directed the film from a script by Alex Garland. Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey co-star.
