Since I was born and raised in New York, I have an affinity for Woody Allen‘s movies despite his behind-the-scenes… life choices. Annie Hall, Manhattan, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Match Point… these are among my favorite films. Though known as one of the consummate “New York City” filmmakers throughout his career, Allen has been forthright in saying that his (generally) low-grossing films are too expensive to make in New York City these days, which is why six of his last seven films were shot and set in various European countries, including his upcoming Midnight In Paris. But where to next for Woody?
It won’t be a return to New York — Deadline reports that Allen‘s next film will be shot and set in Rome. After taking on England, Spain, and France, who knows what Allen has in mind for the Italian capital, although as a self-professed fan of Federico Fellini‘s work (who Allen has paid homage numerous times in his career, most notably with Stardust Memories), I’d imagine Allen will do something that relates to Fellini‘s work.
As usual with Allen‘s films, no cast or plot details have been announced, but we’ll keep you posted!
