Sundance has been in full force now for a few days and one of the most highly talked about films has been a film called Don Jon’s Addiction. The film is directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and it seems that the first time is the charm because Relativity has paid one of the largest amounts ever for a Sundance feature
In case you are wondering what the the hype is all about, the film follows Levitt who is basically god’s gift to women (in his mind) and is your typical ladies man. Hooking up with random women never seems to satisfy him so he comforts himself with online pornography. He finally starts to change his ways after getting in a relationship with two totally different women (Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore). From what the reviews are saying, the film easily has enough sex to clear the NC-17 rating threshold.
Relativity has reportedly purchased the domestic rights to the film for $4 million and has plans to release the film sometime late summer. On top of that, the other kicker in the deal is that Relativity agreed to spend $25 million plus on marketing for the film, which is the real reason the film is setting Sundance numbers (via THR). The plan is to release the film on over 2,000 screens across the country, in hopes that after editing, people will enjoy the movie as much as the crowd at Sundance did.
It is very important that we focus on that last part. As mentioned above, the film, if released in its current state, would easily be given an NC-17 rating which makes it very hard to distribute to as many theaters. That being said, there will have to be drastic editing done to the film to try and get down to an R rating. Will this take too much away from the film and kind of kill the joy many fell in love with during the festival? Maybe, but having not seen the film, it might just mean cutting out a sex scene or two or four.
While Levitt directs and stars in the film, the sex filled film also features, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Glenne Headly,Rob Brown and Tony Danza. Hell, Danza alone is worth the deal alone right? Hopefully the film with make the rounds at SXSW in March and we can catch the film in all of its glory before the editing Nazis get a hold of it!
