If you’ve seen all ten Academy Award-nominated motion pictures for 2011, and have your popcorn and parties set up for this Sunday night, then you’re the type of reader who’ll “oooh” and “aaah” at The Hollywood Reporter’s recent interview with the ceremony’s young hosts James Franco, also nominated in the Best Actor category, and previous nominee, Anne Hathaway. Hit the jump for more juicy details!
Not only does the magazine sit down for a charming Q&A with the hosting duo, but we’ve also learned of some details behind the “8 Ways the Oscars Are Going to Be Radically Different This Year,” straight from the night’s producers, Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer. While last month’s Golden Globes hosted by Ricky Gervais hit a few sour notes, we can certainly expect some pleasant surprises, honoring the history of film and not turning to bitter jabs to make for a memorable telecast.
Also, you can count on a “virtual reality set,” a departure from the typically glamorous tradition that we’ve seen in previous years as “Franco and Hathaway… take viewers on a trip through Hollywood history with six or seven scenic transitions.”
While this is surely to be a refreshing visual feast about all things Hollywood, there is also going to be a “return of nominated song performances.” Randy Newman, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Florence Welch (replacing Dido, who was unavailable) will all be on stage celebrating the nominations of their songs for Toy Story 3, Tangled, Country Strong, and 127 Hours.
This is the first telecast featuring a male-female co-hosting team, while they are also both the youngest to grace the stage in that position. Hathaway says, “standing up and telling jokes is not something that comes easily to me,” yet the expected chemistry between the two very in-demand, tangible, and reachable stars will be making history in the best possible way, while also serving up some new traditions for new generations of movie lovers.
