Once upon a time I had started writing an editorial on how I thought Hollywood studios should take a closer look at the indie world and give both notable and fresh faces a chance at directing a big budget films. I never got around to finishing that piece but over the past year or so there is a clear sign that the studios are mixing it up a bit.
First it was Darren Aronofsky taking directing gig for The Wolverine which unfortunately didn’t come to fruition but now we’ve got an even more interesting turn of events. It appears that Marvel has approached James Gunn, director of Super and Slither, to take on their next big original picture, Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s looking like Gunn is a lock but if for some reason he declines the offer, it’s being reported by Heat vision that Marvel is also looking at Peyton Reed (Bring It On, Yes Man) and the directing team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson).
What Marvel likes about Gunn is his “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror,” something he has in common with Joss Whedon. I for one agree with this and think that Gunn is an excellent candidate to tackle this picture. I’m not sure what his style will be for more family friendly action as a director but given his imagination I think we can expect to see a crazy looking universe and some spectacular intergalactic battles with a badass group of characters.
Plot:
“A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to be released on August 1, 2014
