After last nights world premiere of Joss Whedon‘s latest film Cabin in the Woods, (which you can read about here) He graced the SXSW convention center this morning for an hour long Q&A session to talk not just about Cabin in the Woods, but also The Avengers, Much Ado about Nothing and all the TV shows and Comics he has done.
It was a very fast paced session so I will start it off in order of topics. Not much was said about Cabin in the Woods but here is the little bit of insight we got from Whedon.
Cabin in the Woods
- The film took Whedon and Drew Goddard three days to write and locked themselves in a hotel in order to get through without distractions.
- They wrote the film and sold it to MGM right before the strikes in Hollywood only to have MGM file for Bankruptcy soon after.
- Drew’s inspiration came from horror legends like John Carpenter and George Romero and so he wanted to bring back that classic horror feel from way back when.
- Oh, it was also reiterated as being a “Timeless Classic”
Now to the juice one. Although they tried to stay clear of this topic and we didn’t learn much, he did let something slip ( SPOILER AHEAD, Sort of )
The Avengers
- Whedon has always wanted to do a superhero film and Kevin Feige over at Marvel brought Joss in to pitch some ideas at first, not knowing he was basically being interviewing for the film.
- Was asked about the alien race being the Kree or Skrull in which he reiterated once again that it will be neither. However he did explain why the alien race isn’t a major villain and why the Kree or Skrull are not in it. Whedon said that the Skrulls are a huge story arch in the Avengers universe and that it would have been impossible to give them the story line they deserved while trying to juggle the other stories for the heroes as well. The Skrull deserve their own film where they can dedicate the back story and really build on them. Whedon went on to say,”The Skrulls, they can shape change. That’s a whole thing. “I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow, it’s a real juggling act.”
- His vision for the film was that he really wanted to make an epic war film, one where viewers feel like no one is going to make it out alive.
The next film is more of an independent project he did on his week off of The Avengers and during his 20th wedding anniversary.
Much Ado About Nothing
- The film features what I like to call the Whedon Crew or Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, Fran Kranz and Alexis Denisof and their newest addition Clark Gregg.
- The film is a retelling of the Shakespeare comedy play about two couples and their different views on romance.
- Shooting for the film was done in about 13 days.
- Will be the third film of Whedon’s released in 2012.
- Used the film as a way to take a step back from the Avengers so he could go into the editing phase with a clear head.
Joss went on to talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Sadly there is no word on a return for Firefly although the question was asked a few different ways. He is starting on Season two of his Buffy comics and is planning a few spin-offs for other characters like Willow and Drusilla.
In regards to future project, Whedon said he doesn’t have anything big film wise scheduled any time soon (So no confirmation on if he will return for an Avengers 2) but he did say his next project will be another Web-series called Wastelanders. Unlike Dr.Horrible, the series will be a bit darker and more serious. He didn’t give a release date for the series unfortunately.
Other than that, Joss is still an awesome guy and very down to earth. He high fived a fan and poked fun at himself and his luck over the years.
Cabin in the Woods hits theaters April 13th, The Avengers hit May 5th and Much Ado about Nothing is scheduled for a late 2012 release.
