For fans of Japanese cinema there is a God and he/she has heard our wishes. The prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike is close to signing on for his first English language film called The Outsider and it’s going to star one of the most bad ass actors working in Hollywood today, Tom Hardy! Talk about a winning combination. The man who has made crazy cool films like Ichi The Killer, Audition, Ace Attorney and the amazing 13 Assassins is going to director the man who played Bane, a badass MMA fighter in Warrior and Mad Max in an upcoming remake.
The Outsider will be independently financed and is being produced under Joel Silver’s label, Silver Pictures, who I believe will give Miike the freedom he has earned to make a quality dramatic crime fill that will likely have lots of blood. The script, which was written by Andrew Baldwin, is an “epic story set in post-World War II Japan, chronicling the life of a former American G.I. who becomes part of the Japanese yakuza.”
Granted, not every Asian filmmaker has found success when making the transition to the English language, but I mean, seriously, if there is anyone that can pull it off it has to be the prolific Miike, especially if it’s a Yakuza movie. If they manage to get someone like Takeshi Kitano (who has mastered this genre) to star in the film opposite Hardy I’d say this will be one epic organized crime flick that has the potential to become one of the best out there.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of watching a Miike film you need to make that happen ASAP. Put your “I hate subtitles” B.S. aside and watch at least 13 Assassins, if you hate that movie then I’ll let you go but if you like action and want to see one of the craziest final 45 minutes of a movie where 13 samurai battle nearly 200 warriors then I suggest pulling it up this weekend and watching it, you won’t regret it.
