Nah I’m just kidding, there’s just a remake in the works. Harakiri, aka Seppuku, is the traditional suicide ritual of disembowelment of the Japanese Samurai. It also happens to be the name of a 1962 Japanese samurai classic that is being remade by one of the most interesting Japanese directors out there, Takeshi Miike (Ichi The Killer, Yatterman). The film, which begins production in October, is being shot entirely in 3D so expect some quality gore shots with fantastic direction in this film. Hit the jump to find out more about the film.
The original Hara-kiri starred Tatsuya Nakadai as a samurai on a revenge mission after his son in law is forced to commit hara-kiri with a dull bamboo blade. Ebizo Ichikawa, star of the upcoming Space Battleship Yamato, will be the wise angry samurai on a vengeance trip. The film is expected to be released in 2011, probably around September, and as of now the film still remains untitled.
One of the first reviews I ever posted on this site was for Harakiri, directed by Masaki Kobayashi, so if you’re looking to get a better idea of what the original was about you can read my review for it here.
