James Bond. Sherlock Holmes. Tarzan. These three characters have appeared in films in almost every decade since their first appearances — and Tarzan first appeared on film in 1918!
It has been some time since Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ creation last appeared on movie screens — a very disjointed Disney animated film (although it received generally positive reviews) hit theaters in 1999 and was followed by two direct-to-DVD sequels. But there hasn’t been anything on the ape-man in the 21st century. But Warner Bros is looking to change that — Deadline reports that Craig Brewer (writer of Hustle & Flow and writer/director of Black Snake Moan and the upcoming Footloose remake) has been tapped by the studio to write and possibly direct a new trilogy of Tarzan films. Curiously, Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has also commissioned Adam Cozad (the upcoming Archangel), to also write a Tarzan screenplay. Whether Warner Bros. will choose the best of the two scripts to film or try to smash them together (X-Men: First Class style!) into a single script is anyone’s guess. The project will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (The Ocean’s 11 films), and Alan Riche and Tony Ludwig (Starsky & Hutch). Hey, as far as I’m concerned 2009’s Sherlock Holmes was a great revival of a classic character… why not give Tarzan a try?
