This past October, a little horror film called Sinister hit theaters and scared the crap out of audiences nationwide. Now the brains behind the successful horror film are moving on to another film genre which has been a difficult one to produce critically acclaimed success, Video Game adaptations.
Director Scott Derrickson and Co-writer C. Robert Cargill have joined on with CBS Films to make one of the more popular video games of the 2000’s, Deus Ex. Since I have never played either the original or the prequel that was recently released, I’ll leave the description of the game to Wikipedia.
Deus Ex depicts a society on a slow spiral into chaos. There is a massive division between the rich and the poor, not only socially, but in some cities physically. A lethal pandemic known as the “Gray Death” ravages the world’s population, especially within the United States, and has no cure. A synthetic vaccine, “Ambrosia”, manufactured by the company VersaLife, nullifies the effects of the virus, but is in critically short supply. Because of its scarcity, Ambrosia is available only to those deemed “vital to the social order”, and finds its way primarily to government officials, military personnel, the rich and influential, scientists, and the intellectual elite. With no hope for the common people of the world, riots occur worldwide, and a number of terrorist organizations have formed with the professed intent of assisting the downtrodden, among them the National Secessionist Force of the U.S. and a French group known as Silhouette.
In order to combat these threats to the world order, the United Nations has greatly expanded its governmental influence around the globe. The United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) is formed, with the intent of maintaining peace internationally and combating the world’s ever-growing number of terrorist groups. It is headquartered near New York City in a bunker beneath Liberty Island, placed there after a terrorist strike on the Statue of Liberty.
While the information above is a very brief and general overview of the first game, the actual film seems to be following along the lines of the prequel that was release Deus Ex: Human Revolution. CBS films released a press release regarding the announcement of the creative team and a plot for the film.
Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy
Mentioned in the release is that Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh will produce the film. No mention of casting or anticipated production dates were mentioned in the release, however with getting Derrikson and Cargill on board, it seems that CBS is planning on getting the ball rolling pretty quickly on the film.
I will say having never played the games and reading the synopsis for the film, I’m a bit curious to give them a go and see what this world is really about. Nothing like a good conspiracy movie with cybernetic human modification. Just asking around, people have had nothing but good things to say about the game and the intricate story line.
That being said, it seems that while we can find ways to get films like Deus Ex, God of War, Assassins Creed, etc. made, there is still no hope for a freaking HALO movie! Maybe if Deus Ex transfers into a box office success, maybe just maybe this will bring some new light into a Halo film. Sorry had to get my Halo rant in here!
