Two new posters were revealed today for a few of next summers hottest blockbusters, J.J. Abrams’ sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness and Zach Snyder’s, Man of Steel. While there have been a few posters released for Man of Steel, this is the first teaser poster from Star Trek.
With news that the first trailer and the 9 minute Star Trek prologue would be shown during The Hobbit next week, Star Trek has been in the news more in the last week or so then it has in months. Now throw a promo poster into the mix and it seems that things are actually picking up for the very secretive sequel. The teaser poster doesn’t give away much and it does follow the recent trend in posters with showing the back side of a person looking at destruction or the challenge that faces them (See the Dark Knight posters, Battleship, Battle LA, etc.) In Star Trek Into Darkness, it seems to show Benedict Cumberbatch‘s character walking out of either a destroyed ship or building that has been blown open to look like the iconic Star Trek emblem. What exactly this means or signifies is still anyone’s guess, but I’m going to assume this will make more sense once the trailer hits.
As of right now the only thing we know about the film is what the cryptic studio synopsis provides us:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Now to change the tide just a bit, the latest poster for Man of Steel was also released today and it seems that this is a side of Superman many have not seen before, in handcuffs. There will be a crazy trailer for the film before The Hobbit as well and from the trailer shown during SDCC we know that Superman becomes the villain, sort of, and gets taken/allows himself to be taken into custody.
Clearly from the poster, one can understand the tone of the film without even having to see a trailer or footage from it. This is going to be a much darker telling of Superman than what has been done before. Christopher Nolan did help with the script so if you have seen any of the Dark Knight films, you know where this is headed. Still would love to see a few character posters come out soon so we can all kneel before Zod!
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.
