It’s been talked about a lot over the past year, Michael Bay‘s plans to take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. The ’90s classic was much adored by fans, and ever since Bay took over the production reigns for the upcoming film there’s been controversy after controversy. The turtles would be all CGI – a much loved vice from Bay. The turtles wouldn’t actually be turtles but aliens of some sort, very confusing for fans and another slap in the face.
Well now, all the speculation and waiting is over, because our first trailer is here for us all to judge!
We get a small glimpse of the turtles, and one particular shot of Michelangelo in all of his weird-looking CGI glory. We get a fleeting glimpse of Shredder, which to be fair, is awesome! And a lot of Megan Fox with a glazed over stare. The thing is, it isn’t as bad as we all thought, in fact, it looks…interesting.
So the William Fichtner voice over is a bit over the top, and it all feels very “go big or go home” from the destruction in the trailer, but this is a Michael Bay produced/Jonathan Liebesman director film, whos credits include Wrath of the Titans and Battle Los Angeles. Was it ever going to be anything else?
TMNT is definitely distancing itself away from the campy-90s turtle films and perhaps that isn’t a bad thing? We loved it, and anything trying to replicate that would be met with extreme backlash. As far as teasers go, this is a good step, and we’ve certainly seen worse.
