After much speculation and promises from Lionsgate, the company came through on their word and gave the world a brief teaser for the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games during the MTV Video Music Awards.
The teaser was introduced by Jennifer Lawrence via video from the set of the film in North Carolina. In the film Lawrence takes on the role of Katniss who is the lead in the story. In the minute long teaser, we don’t really see a whole lot because, again, it is just a teaser but we see Katniss running through the woods dodging fireballs and flaming logs in what appears to be the Hunger Games arena. During her running and dodging there is a voice over by her friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth) reminding her she is great and that she is a hunter and to “Show’em how good you are”. Since I have never read the books I don’t know much about the movie however my friends were really excited about Katniss pulling the bow and arrow out, which is supposedly her specialty.
We haven’t really been shown much prior to the teaser ( and we still don’t see much ) in regards to the film. There has been a motion poster, a couple of stills that were published in Entertainment Weekly and also a few one second clips of the film. Whatever the Hunger Games is doing to keep the film so tightly under wraps, they need to share it with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises .
Just in case you are like me and have never read the books by Suzanne Collins, here is a brief synopsis of what to expect from the film and what the books are about:
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross and also features Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz. The first film in the four-film series is set to hit theaters March 23, 2012.
