Earlier this year we had the Farrelly brothers say that they were finally making a sequel to Dumb & Dumber, their 1994 comedy which is generally held up as one of the funniest (and most quotable) movies ever made. Soon after Jim Carrey was talking about it too, which was exciting, but it wasn’t long before Carrey announced that he pulled out of the project because he felt New Line and Warner Bros. weren’t fast-tracking the project. As one of the few sequels that actually deserve to be made, I was hugely disappointed.
Curiously, the one person we haven’t heard much from about Dumb & Dumber 2 is Jeff Daniels, Carrey’s co-star. Turns out Daniels is finally talking about the film, and what’s more, he reveals that the project is back on! As Daniels tells The Daily Star:
We almost were able to kinda get it done this year, but they’re still working on the script. Jim wants to do it, I want to do it, the Farrellys want to do it… We’re all hoping that it’ll come together early next year.
The good news here is that everybody wants to see this project happen. I’m a bit wary about the “hoping” part, but any news is good news, especially since we’ve heard from all the key people behind the original. How much of the script, which is being written by Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine), is left to be done is anyone’s guess, but I don’t think anybody wants to see a Dumb & Dumber sequel unless it comes close to the original’s hilarious brilliance.
Man, in the last week we’ve gotten word about Bad Santa and Dumb & Dumber sequels. I’d call it the best week ever for sequel news if we didn’t also find out Ghostbusters 3 is moving forward without Bill Murray (boo!)
