Visionary director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) released only two films in the entire 1970s, Badlands and Days of Heaven, and then didn’t make another film until 1998’s The Thin Red Line. So for a director who has only released five films in a nearly forty-year career, it’s shocking news that The Hollywood Reporter says that Malick will shoot two films in 2012, Lawless and Knight of Cups.
Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett will appear in both films. In Lawless, Bale and Blanchett will be in supporting roles joined by Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, and Haley Bennett. Bale will be the lead in Knight of Cups, starring with Blanchett and Isabel Lucas.
As usual, there’s no word on what either film is about (like anyone would be able to summarize the plot of a Malick film, anyway). In fact, there’s no word on what Malick’s next film will even be titled, which stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz, due out next year.
As a result, Malick has three films total in the pipeline — yikes, he better slow down. We don’t want him to overwork himself.
