It seems like everyone who was hesitant about Marc Webb‘s reboot The Amazing Spider-Man can rest easy now because it just broke a box office record and with that the studio has released their intentions on the future of the franchise.
The Amazing Spider-Man ended up earning $35 million on its opening day which shattered the record for a film opening on a Tuesday. With those numbers along with the $7.5 million it made during its midnight showings, the film is estimated to haul in around $150 million this week. While these aren’t The Avengers or Dark Knight Rises numbers, Sony is still pleased and has spilled a little bit of information via their Facebook account regarding the future for the franchise.
We already knew the film would be getting a sequel before the first one ever came out but now we know that Sony plans on making it a trilogy and will continue to follow Peter Parker and how he handles his powers.
Here is the exact wording from Sony’s Facebook account:
It’s finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.
While it doesn’t provide us with any insight into the films’ future or what villains might play a role, we do sort of get a hint at the end of the film in the credits. If you haven’t seen the film, be sure to stick around.
Also, Marc Webb hasn’t been confirmed for any of the future films, which isn’t too shocking, but lets hope they let the man stick it out through the end much like Sam Raimi and Christopher Nolan did. I have never been a fan of switching directors for every film in a franchise unless their first film was terrible, then it is understandable.
