I was very hesitant to add fuel to this story when I first heard about it a few days ago on MTV Geek and their coverage of the 2012 Toy Fair. During their cruising of the Jakks Pacific showroom floor, they came across a board game for the upcoming film, The Avengers. They took some interesting photos of some of the games pieces that have now caused a major debate. So before I continue any further, I do want to advise that the below information should be taken as a MAJOR SPOILER even though it still doesn’t confirm the villain. Check out below for photos and a LOGICAL explanation of what it means.
As you can see from the box above, this seems like a normal Marvel board game and there isn’t much to see here, until further investigation. Supposedly this is a board game to correlate with the film’s release, does that mean it is based on the film? Absolutely not! But you see those weird pink things, lets take a closer look and see what they could be in a bit more detail.
Upon closer review, they are none other then the famous alien race the Skrulls. Clearly there is no other explanation as to who these guys are. If you are having doubts, here is what the Skrulls look like in the comics:
Pretty similar!
So does that mean these guys are the other villains in the movie? No, and here are a few reasons why.
- Kevin Feige has reiterated numerous times that the Skrull WILL NOT be in the movie, however he did say that another alien race would be.
- Just because they are in this board game does not mean they are in the movie. It’s a board game and will have its own story for game play.
- Supposedly, which this has yet to be verified, Marvel doesn’t own the rights to the Skrulls, Fox does. They allegedly received the rights when they purchased the Fantastic Four rights as a package deal. The Skrull were a big part in the Fantastic Four story line so it really isn’t all that shocking to find out, if in fact that is true. However, I am not fully convinced this is true because if anyone has watched the cartoon Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes which is Marvel and airs on Disney XD they depict and use the Skrull and even leave the end of season one hinting at the Kree/Skrull war. So if Fox owns the rights to the Skrull, how can they be shown on a Disney channel by Marvel? Unless the deal was just for film rights.
- Just because Marvel can’t use the Skrull doesn’t mean there aren’t other alien races who can shape shift and have been a nuisance in the Marvel universe. The Kree and Chitauri come to mind in particular.
- Will it be the Kree then since they were at war with the Skrull? There is a very very small possibility but very unlikely because this would infuriate fans for many reason.
- So that leave the Chitauri, which I am fairly confident will be the NAME of the alien race in the film. The reason being, in case you haven’t noticed, these are the Ultimate Avengers (Google Ultimate Nick Fury and that will explain everything). In the Ultimate universe, the Skrull didn’t exist and were basically replaced with this other Alien Shape-shifter race called the Chitauri. But here’s the kicker, the Chitauri don’t look anything like the Skrull or these game pieces above, but that doesn’t mean Marvel can’t use the Skrull “look” and rename them Chitauri.
So there you have it, in summation here is what we do know, Loki has some kind of alien army and they attack earth on some sort of flying devices. For people holding their breaths for them to be “SKRULL”, now would be a good time to exhale because it doesn’t look promising, despite whatever board games and toys they put out.
