The Dark Knight Rises — AKA the Most Anticipated Sequel In The History of Film — officially began production yesterday. Since that didn’t add anything new to what we know about the film (I mean, we all knew it had to go into production sometime), it didn’t seem like something worth reporting.
But this… THIS is something worth reporting.
You may remember that The Dark Knight has perhaps one of the most well-run viral campaigns since the whole “viral” campaigning kick started. It’s no surprise then that director Christopher Nolanand his crew are continuing the viral shennigans this time around, too. The Dark Knight Rises official website recently went live, and there’s nothing there except a black screen and some creepy chanting. Folks over at Superhero Hypehave figured out that the chanting audio file has a signature that says #TheFireRises which, of course, is a reference to Twitter. After jumping through several more hoops and taking a physical challenge (I’m making that last part up), you get to view this magnificent image:
That’s Tom Hardyas Bane, the drug-enhanced supervillain whose goal is to “break” Batman! Of course, there’s not much we can see here, but… I love it. So much more than this clown:
Ugh. But Christopher Nolan… I never thought I could love a filmmaker like I love you. You have made even the goofiest Batman and Robin movie villain into someone who I am very, very, afraid of with only one picture, making him the serious threat that he always has been in the comics. I remember being skeptical about the first image of Heath Ledger as the Joker back when that was released, but I’m convinced of the genius of this look for Bane right from the get-go.
The Dark Knight Rises features Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. Joining them will be Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathawayas Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Marion Cotillard as a Wayne Enterprises board member, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Officer John Blake, Alan Aboutboul as a “mad scientist”. and Josh Penceas the young Ra’s Al Ghul for flashback scenes. Christopher Nolan, of course, is returning to direct from a script by the Nolan brothers.
