Nice of you to finally show up, Mr. Jackson!
All kidding aside, I’m happy to report that yesterday, March 20th, 2011 was the first official day of production on the two Hobbit films. Director/Producer/co-screenwriter Peter Jackson took the above photo to celebrate the occasion, along with the below photo, both provided by Latino Review.
In addition, The One Ring is reporting that Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi have been cast as dwarf kings Thrain and Thror — the father and grandfather of head dwarf Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), respectively. Since they do not appear in the narrative in The Hobbit itself, when can assume they appear in flashbacks since Thorin mentions his forefathers quite often, as a dwarf is wont to do.
The Hobbit films — which are reportedly individually titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again — are set for a two-part release in December 2012 and 2013. Many actors from the Lord of the Rings trilogy are returning to reprise their roles in the Hobbit project, including Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and Andy Serkis.
Actors new to Middle-Earth include Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, along with Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner, James Nesbitt, Graham McTavish, Robert Kazinsky, Jed Brophy, Ken Scott, Stephen Hunter, John Callen, Adam Brown, William Kircher, Mark Hadlow, and Peter Hambleton, who will all be playing Bilbo’s thirteen dwarf companions.
