The biggest trouble with The Hobbit films is the thirteen characters who comprise the dwarves (not dwarfs — that’s how J.R.R. Tolkien himself spelled it!) of Thorin’s Company. Why? Well, how do you make thirteen short bearded dudes look different enough that audiences won’t be confused by them? Well, wonder no longer: The Hobbit Facebook page has posted the following photo showing three of the dwarves in costume!
The image features Jed Brophy as Nori, Adam Brown as Ori, and Mark Hadlow as Dori. The post also provides the following description:
These three brothers, all sons of the same mother, could not be more different from each other. Dori, the oldest, spends much of his time watching out for Ori, the youngest; making sure he’s not caught a chill or got himself killed by Wargs or Goblins. Nobody quite knows what Nori gets up to most of the time, except that it’s guaranteed to be dodgy and quite probably, illegal. Dori, Nori and Ori are intensely loyal to each other – and whilst they are perfectly happy fighting amongst themselves, woe-betide anyone who means harm to one of these brothers.”
I’m excited by this: not only has WETA gone out of its way to make the three dwarves look visually very different (even making me think “WTF is up with Nori’s hair?”), but has even given them distinct personalities in that short text piece. I can’t wait to see what the other ten look like now!
Dori, Ori, and Nori will appear with the rest of the mega-cast in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is set for a December 14, 2012 release and, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. which is set for a December 13, 2013 release.
