Doc Hopper would be happy to see Kermit finally showing off those legs! I can’t say I really “get” the joke here in the poster for The Muppets (Why are they closer? Because they’re walking toward me? Because it’s coming out this year?) , but as a lifelong fan of Kermit and friends I can’t help but be excited to see the first poster advertising their return to the big screen. Showing the gang in a full shot is an interesting choice since we normally see them from the waist up — sort of like Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show — but it reminds me of the “You Can’t Take No For an Answer” song bit from The Muppets Take Manhattan, so it’s all good. I am happy that the poster highlights the film’s real stars and doesn’t focus on the dozens of Hollywood actors who will be appearing in the film. I’m glad they’re showing true respect to the real stars!
The official synopsis of the film from Disney:
”On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino house band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, The Muppets hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.”
Definitely sounds like a lot of fun! The script was written by Jason Segel (who starred in/wrote Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Nicholas Stoller (who directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and is directed by James Bobin (TV’s Da Ali G Show). The film faces some stiff competition from the glut of family films released in November/December, but I have no doubts the Muppet gang can prove they’ve still got it.
