There’s been lots of buzz surrounding the big screen version of Divergent, the film based on the young adult best seller of the same name by Veronica Roth, which just cast its leading man. Theo James of Downton Abbey fame, who currently stars on the CBS drama Golden Boy, has landed the role of Four, opposite Golden Globe nominee, Shailene Woodley (The Descendents), who plays the female lead, Tris Prior.
The film is “set in a futuristic dystopia, a teenager (Woodley) seeks to break free from her homogeneous society that divides people based on human traits. She leaves her faction and joins a rival group, where she falls for a young man (James),” according to IMDB. Also set for the movie are Kate Winslet (Movie 43), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), up-and-comer Miles Teller (21 & Over) Maggie Q (TV’s Nikita), and Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class).
The Lionsgate film is expected to meet with blockbuster success after co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger brought The Twilight Saga to Summit before Lionsgate acquired the company, as per Deadline. The movie house also shared their reasoning behind casting James in the star-making role: “Theo is not only an incredibly talented actor, he is also who we envisioned as Four when reading Veronica’s novel which has taken the world by storm. As we continue to develop the film, the studio remains committed to providing fans with a movie adaptation that stays as true to the book as possible and we are confident that we have done so with our selection of Shailene and Theo in the leading roles.”
Divergent is directed by Neil Burger who is famous for Limitless, The Lucky Ones, and The Illusionist. Also, the film’s script is brought to life by Snow White and The Huntsman scribe Evan Daugherty, which will make for a very exciting combination, especially with Winslet who has never really ventured into the realm of fantasy futuristic films.
The film is set for a March 2014 premiere. Qre you a fan of Divergent novel? Have you been following this production? Do you think this novel is worthy of such a versatile cast?
