Movie Buzzers had the great opportunity to be at a New York City screening of This Is The End with producers/writers/directors Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (Rogen also stars, of course). Let me first say that the movie is hysterical and blows The Hangover Part III out of the water (you can check out Alex’s review of the film here!)
I was able to chat with Evan Goldberg for a bit and he told me a lot about the film — including why he would eat one of your favorite stars from The Office.
Evan Goldberg
Q: First of all, you co-directed this movie with Seth Rogen. That was a big change for you. How did you adapt to directing a film?
Evan Goldberg: It wasn’t really that big of a deal for him or me because on Knocked Up and Pineapple Express and Superbad, Green Hornet, 50/50 all the directors of those films kind of let us help out. All those guys would let us have more access than you would expect to the actors. So we both almost directed things before. Like, if we had a note to give to Joseph Gordon-Levitt during 50/50 the director would be like, “You just go give him the note.” So we had a lot of training I would say from all these five other directors that we worked with that kind of got us ready. So it wasn’t a big transition.
Q: What makd you think that you guys just hanging out being yourselves would’ve made an interesting movie that the public would respond to?
Evan Goldberg: Nothing, that’s why we had to have the apocalypse happen! [Laughs]
Q: Any problems shooting the film with all the special effects? How was that shooting the movie versus shooting a more conventional comedy?
Evan Goldberg: It was crazy. Even with The Green Hornet that movie was so expensive that we just actually blew up bridges and trucks and stuff, so we were extremely inexperienced when it came to this kind of stuff. The visual effects took way more time, way more effort — I have so much respect for Roland Emmerich now because one of those shots would take like three weeks alone in a dark room. We always thought that you just told some nerd, like, “pump out a monster and throw him down this hallway,” and it didn’t work out like that. You have to sit there for hours with a laser pointer.
Q: Out of all the actors in the movie, if you were facing the apocalypse with one of them who would you want to be by your side?
Evan Goldberg: I think I’d go with Jay Baruchel. He requires the least sustenance, so that leaves more for me. But then again if it’s Craig Robinson it depends on how much calorie intake converts into human body fat. Because then maybe I live with Craig, let him eat, kill him, eat him. So Jay or Craig.
Seth Rogen
I only had the opportunity to ask Rogen one question, so I tried to make it a good one:
Q: First of all, you were awesome on Stern this morning.
Seth Rogen: Oh, thank you so much.
Q: I just wanted to ask, was it weird because it was not only the first time you were directing but you were directing your friends as themselves?
Seth Rogen: Yeah, it was fun doing that. I think its intimidating to direct a movie and when you’re friends with all the guys in it, it makes it a lot less intimidating, which is nice. So yeah, it was fun, I was glad they were there for it.
