We’ve been following the Terminator 5 updates for months (years?) here at Movie Buzzers, and while the possible reboot has had all manner of pre-production issues it has yet to nail down one if its most important elements: a director. Directors like Ang Lee, Rian Johnson, and Justin Lin were previously in the mix, but no deals were ever sealed.
Still, there’s a lot we already have known. We know Arnold Schwarzenegger expects to be back in some form or fashion and has said it begins shooting in January. We know the screenplay is being written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, and that Kalogridis has a James Cameron connection because she co-wrote the screenplay for Cameron’s long-in-development Battle Angel and was an executive producer on Avatar. We also know that producers Megan Ellison and David Ellison only have the rights to make Terminator films until 2019, which is when the rights to the franchise revert to Cameron, but the Ellisons intend to make a new trilogy by then. Finally, we also know that the film is already set for a June 26, 2015 release.
Now according to Variety a director has been found. Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor has been selected to direct the sequel and/or reboot. Previously Taylor also directed television, including episodes of The Sopranos and Game of Thrones). Early word on Thor 2 is good, so there’s a good chance that Taylor is a good man for the job.
However, I still remain skeptical about there even being a potentially good film left in the Terminator franchise. The third and fourth films and the television series failed to capture the greatness of the first two Cameron films, so I’m hoping that the Ellisons have something great planned or we’ll just end up with another dud sequel and/or reboot in a summer (2015) that will probably be filled with them!
