As the resident Muppets expert here at Movie Buzzers, I’m happy to report whenever there is news about the next Muppets film now that Kermit the Frog and friends have regained their (rightful) place at the forefront of pop culture.
Up until now, all we knew was that James Bobin is tackling the sequel as writer/director (along with co-writer Nicholas Stoller), the film would primarily be set in Europe, it would be a “caper” film, and the human cast would include Ricky Gervais, Ray Liotta, Tina Fey, and Ty Burrell. But today Entertainment Weekly not only revealed the film’s title and first look image, but also its plot.
Cue Kermit’s patented arm-flailing “Yaaaaaay!” Following their successful return to the pop culture spotlight with 2011’s The Muppets, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and the rest of the gang are heading back to the big screen. The Muppets…Again!, currently shooting in London and due in theaters March 21, 2014, finds the Muppet repertory company enjoying a triumphant world tour, only to become tangled up with a criminal mastermind named Constantine, who is out to steal an enormous diamond—and who happens to be a dead ringer for Kermit.
Entertainment Weekly also has an interview with Kermit, and the Muppets ringleader added, “The idea of this film is that our gang is on this global tour, and we’re selling out these grand theaters all over Europe—in Berlin, Madrid, London—but we sort of get into a little bit of trouble when we run across my doppleganger. He’s the world’s number one criminal, Constantine, and he happens to look an awful lot like me. I won’t tell you any more than that, but let’s just say mayhem ensues.” Kermit also points out that he will NOT also star as Constantine, mostly because “Constantine needed to be a guy who could do a Russian accent,” and that Gervais will play Constantine’s sidekick, Fey will play a Russian prison guard, and Burrell will appear as a French Interpol agent.
All I know is that it sounds like a lot of fun. Disney has set The Muppets… Again! for a March 21, 2014 release.
