After announcing Fassbender would take the lead in the Assassin’s Creed film adaptation, Ubisoft’s Motion Picture division is continuing its hot streak with the casting announcement of Tom Hardy in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie. In addition to the announcement of the film and Hardy’s role, Eric Warren Singer (The International) has been unveiled as the man who will be penning the script for the potential mega-franchise.
For those who don’t know anything about Splinter Cell it follows the missions of a highly trained black-ops agent named Fisher who specializes in stealth missions. Pretty bad ass, right? It’s a fun video game if you the patience for it and love night vision goggles.
All I can say is I’m surprised it took this long for this to happen. This game has massive franchise potential and though video game adaptations haven’t been that great, Ubisofts recently announced titles are perfect for the big screen. Singer has experience with agents and smart thrillers so he isn’t a bad candidate to pen the film and as important as the script is this is all going to come down to the director. It needs to be someone who can create a lot of suspension while delivering very cool execution sequences, something which I think Darren Aronofsky could be a good candidate since he didn’t take on The Wolverine.
As for Tom Hardy, I love the guy and think he can pull it off because of how malleable he is as an actor and how important the details are to him. The only thing I remain skeptical about is his flexible ability. For those of you who remember the game well, way back when the original Xbox first came out, the lead in the game, Fisher, is fit and flexible and is able to pull of some really cool moves. It’ll be interesting to see if Hardy is able to pull of some of those cool spy feats.
Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had this to say about the announcement:
“Tom Hardy is one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. In addition, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers today. We’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story for the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”
What do you all think of the casting announcement, is Hardy right for the role? Who do you think should direct?
