I love top 10 lists but at the same time I also hate them. When you’ve seen a lot of movies and you legitimately liked more than 10 it becomes difficult to select which ones deserve to make the list. Honorable mentions can give the other films exposure but if they aren’t given a number it seems like they are lesser films.
Luckily for me, I can make another list that includes films that would never make the quality features list. A list chock full of films that are insane, hilarious, b-rated, bloody and anything off the wall that you could possibly imagine from all corners of the world. These films don’t necessarily have to be good, they can either be a lot of fun, really disturbing, extremely gory or just plain odd. My recommendation is to watch these films under the influence of some substance, ideally alcohol, for watching any of these without it will make you feel as if you’ve lost your mind (which is also totally fine-that’s how I did it for my first screenings). I’d also watch them with a friend so you can share your bizarre experiences with each other for the rest of your lives.
Here is my list of the Top 10 Wildest Movies of 2011 [that I’ve seen]!
10. Horny House of Horror-A comical b-rated Japanese torture porn that will make you cringe as a man and, somehow, manage to make you laugh as well. [Review]
9. Beyond the Black Rainbow-I saw this film at the Tribeca Film Festival and I still have no idea what it was about. It’s a sci-fi feature with, what looks like, droids from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace except they have baby faces underneath their helmets. The film may not be wild but the experimental concept is insane enough for me to include it on this list.
8. Underwater Love-As much as the Japanese love their musicals they also love their Pink Eiga (aka Japanese theatrical softcore porn) so why not do the obviously and mash the two together? This movie is absolutely ridiculous, sometimes hilarious but most of all outlandish and absurd. If you’re up to it, take a crack at it with some friends of yours. [Review]
7. Karate Robo-Zaborgar-One of the few quality films on the list, this tribute to an old transformer’s like Japanese TV show is directed by Noboru Iguchi, the big guy who loves T&A as much as any horny old guy. This movie is imaginative, hilarious and chock full of memorable quotes but, most importantly, it has weapons coming out of said T&A body parts. [Review]
6. The Last Circus-While I wasn’t a huge fan of Alex de la Iglesia’s Spanish Civil War comedy horror, it does have a certain appeal for genre fans. What makes this film so special is that is has a mentally unstable sad clown arming himself with a machine gun in order to save Natalia from her abusive husband, the happy clown. Machine guns, aggressive clowns and a sexy Spanish lady in between, sounds like a bad circus joke, right? [Review]
5. BKO: Bangkok Knockout – This Thai action film has a terrible story and bad acting but the action sequences are bar-none, some of the best I’ve ever seen. That’s because it takes the stunt team and director from Ong Bak and makes them the stars. It’s f’in insane. [Review]
4. Rubber – All you need to know about this movie is that a really pissed off tire discovers he has telepathic powers and can blow people’s heads off. Yup, it’s a movie about a serial killing tire. Enjoy. [Review]
3. Milocrorze: A Love Story-This was such a fun movie that I’m surprised I didn’t include it as an honorable mention on my list of this year’s best films. This three part love story is a unique piece of Japanese cinema that can entertain practically anybody willing to sit down and watch it. It is split into three chapters: chapter one- a pop art looking world about a 7 year old boy in love with an older woman; chapter two-a guy offers up ludicrous relationship advice to other men over the phone and then breaks out into song and dance with sexy ladies while wearing a Saturday Night Fever outfit; and chapter three-A medieval Samurai hunts down his kidnapped girlfriend. There is a lot going on in this movie but it is wildly entertaining and actually has a very enjoyable story. [Review]
2. Hobo with a Shotgun-What happens when you give a shotgun to a pissed off hobo with nothing to lose? Absolute chaos! Oh, did I mention Rutger Hauer stars as said Hobo. So yes, this movie is for a special kind of filmgoer who enjoys a hearty dose of blood, mayhem and a plethora of flying limbs. [Review]
1. Yakuza Weapon – Imagine this: An angry Yakuza (Tak Sakaguchi) who is pretty much the Rambo of Japan who then gets one arm blown off and replaced with a machine gun. Let the insanity ensue. It’s hilarious, bloody and a great flick to watch with your friends while chugging down multiple Sapporos. [Review]
Honorable Mentions:
The Hangover Part II-I’ve included this one because of the next level of raunchiness it takes us to even though it isn’t nearly as good as the first. When you have a Tranny walking around naked in a movie there is something to be said as to the insanity of its creators and the unsuspecting audience watching it.
Rabies-The first Israeli slasher film would be considered too tame for this list, but I’m giving it an honorable mention because of the genius of the story and the ridiculous nature of how all the killings unfold.
Human Centipede 2: Full sequence-Only because of its sadistic and extremely disturbing nature does this movie get to be mentioned. We all know it’s a crap film but there is no denying that when you strap 12 people together ass-to-mouth using a staple gun that you are in for a wildly disgusting time.
The Violent Kind-An extremely shitty movie that starts off as a regular slasher film somehow manages to bring aliens into the picture. Your reaction is almost worse than what happens when you are watching Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for the first time and you find out what the team is actually discovering. This is just garbage but hence the crazy part.
Kaboom-An extremely trippy sexual adventure. While I can’t say it is any good, it will definitely make you question your sanity as you sit there taking it all in.
Helldriver-This is sort of like the b-rated Japanese version of Zombieland, but not really. Yoshihiro Nishimura’s bloodsoaked zombie film isn’t his best work but there some action sequences that take zombie fighting to an entirely new level. This is a must watch for Sushi Typhoon fans.
A Serbian Film-I’d rather not say anything about this one. If you’ve heard of it then you know why, if not then do your job and find out (by clicking here).
Ninja Kids!!! – Probably the only family film to ever done a list of this nature. It’s a family film directed by Takeshi Miike who brings his zany style to a children’s manga. This is a very goofy film but also heartfelt and very funny. If it made an audience of critics laugh continually throughout it will most likely do the same for any open minded individual. Compared to othe rkids films, this one does enough to reach the end of the crazy spectrum.
