Good call on excluding the early 90s, because I immediately thought of half the films you listed (plus Groundhog Day… can’t forget Bill Murray’s modern classic … oh and Unforgiven!) To your list, I’d add Fargo (1996) and The Big Lebowski (1998), because the Coen brothers were one of the more unique cinematic “voices” out there during the 90s.

I might as well throw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on the list while I’m at it… though you already have Carrey and Winslet listed. Otherwise I can’t argue with any of your choices — some of the films I’m not a huge fan of, but they’re certainly enough of cultural milestones that they shouldn’t be touched.

I disagree on the 40 year old virgin one. I found that movie kind of depressing and not funny. It could have been way better.

I’d say any Quentin Tarantino movie.

If I had made this list today I’d probably include a few Tarantino films in one

What about Braveheart? Don’t you think that movie falls into the catagory of “classic”?

F.O.S. - you’re absolutely right. I should probably add an honorable mention section because Braveheart, indeed, should never EVER be remade. When I was coming up with this list it didn’t even register at the time.

Edward Scissorhands should be there and sorry to burst your bubble but Oldboy’s already been remade.

      Hi Jake,

As you can see from Alex’s article (which was written in November 2010), he was complaining about the possibility of an Oldboy remake… which didn’t start filming until October 2012. So Alex was ahead of his time. Thanks for reading!

By the way, what are you wearing, Jake from State Farm?
