Although I do miss the brilliant original Pixar shorts — though those will still continue — I like how Disney/Pixar is continuing the Toy Story franchise through theatrical shorts rather than going for the obvious (and unnecessary) Toy Story 4. People love these characters and it’s wonderful that they get to continue appearing with the original voices to get our much-needed doses of Woody and the gang.
So it’s fantastic news that the long-rumored Toy Story short that will appear before The Muppets has finally been officially confirmed via the Pixar Twitter feed with the additional announcement that the short will be titled ‘Small Fry’ and that Angus MacLane is directing it. MacLane has worked as an animator on nearly every Pixar film since A Bug’s Life, so it’s great to see him “graduate” to the director’s chair. There aren’t any plot details yet for the short, so that’s all we have to go on so far.
The Muppets hits theaters on November 23. Let’s hope it fares better than the last film that had a Toy Story short, Cars 2, which is not only the worst-reviewed Pixar film but one of its lowest grossing.
