If there is one thing that Asylum Studios specializes in it is the mockbuster–cheaply made versions of the blockbuster or other well-known movies, either designed to be for collectors who are obsessed with everything from the actual blockbuster, or for relatives who see a movie on their holiday shopping lists and can’t tell the difference between the $200 million one and the $200 one.
Regardless, what makes these films so fun (yes I said the f-word), is the fact that they are made on the cheap. While being made with little money in theory should focus the filmmakers to make sure other aspects of production (such as the script) are very strong, Asylum usually doesn’t have a strong idea of what comprises a well-executed film, allowing for many moments of unintentional hilarity. Such is the case with the trailer for Asylum’s Atlantic Rim, a movie obviously taking cues from Pacific Rim coming out this summer.
Many of the same plot elements seem to be present–People in controlled mechs fighting monsters. Surprisingly however, the trailer does look like an entertaining film, though obviously not a mind blowing one. The CGI is incredibly dodgy, to be sure, but the character interactions appear decently acted and the cheapness of the film doesn’t show as much since the trailer often has many darkly lit sh0ts. Of course, appearances can be deceiving. Might there be moments of hilarity lurking beyond the seriousness? Watch the trailer and judge for yourself.
