For anyone who is interested in up and coming international films, then Miss Bala is something that you have to check out! The trailer for the film, starring Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman and directed by Gerardo Naranjo (Revolución), paints a thrilling landscape of a pageant contestant’s gripping struggle when caught in the underbelly of the Mexican drug world.
Slash Film suspects that this fifth film by Naranjo, who also co-wrote it with Mauricio Katz, will be the vehicle that catapults his work to international fame. Additional praise for the movie captures the complexity behind scripting and characterization, which is obvious in the juxtaposition of seemingly innocent Laura (Sigman) which is obvious in the juxtaposition of seemingly innocent Laura held against her will in the confines of a criminal lifestyle.
Gerardo Naranjo’s latest feature, Miss Bala, explores the many extremes of modern Mexican society when the world of beauty pageants and the current drug war collide. Stunning Laura, the only witness to a night-club massacre by a group of narcos, realizes her goal of becoming Miss Baja California – although the gang’s hand in the coronation makes it fall short of what she had dreamed it would be.
While there is no release date for the film in the United States, it is set for a September 2011 opening in Mexico. Miss Bala has also earned lots of buzz at the Cannes festival and is set to premiere at the Toronto and New York International Film Festivals over the next two months.
