Spring Breakers opens later this month, but that’s not the last you’ll see of pretty teenaged girls behaving badly. In director Sofia Coppola’s latest project, Emma Watson leads a cast of fame-obsessed teens who use social media to track the locations of and rob celebrity homes in The Bling Ring.
In the less-than-a-minute trailer, we see Watson, along with Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), Halston Sage (How to Rock), and a slew of other well-manicured under-aged mugs as they ransack designer bags, luxury clothing, and decadent jewelry, but they use the term “shopping” to disguise their illegal sprees. Also in the film are Leslie Mann (This is 40) as Watson’s on-screen mother, Bush musician Gavin Rossdale, and Erin Daniels (The L Word).
Entertainment Weekly reports that the film takes place between 2008 -2009, and is based on the actual targeting of the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Orlando Bloom. While crimes like these seem minor in the face of political woes, hate crimes, and other such social injustices, it’s refreshing to see through Coppola’s always visionary eyes how to glamorous world of a shallow and careless teenager, one who is probably spoiled and feels invincible, can destroy the lives of the people around her.
With just a glimpse at the film, The Bling Ring looks to stack up Emma Watson against Coppola’s previous female-centric films like Elle Fanning’s engaging performance in Somewhere, Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst as the historical queen, Scarlett Johansson’s soul-searching connections in Lost in Translation, and the darkness of the Lisbon sisters in The Virgin Suicides.
The film is set for a June 14th release. What do you think of Coppola’s story? Do you follow Coppola’s projects? Are you interested in seeing Watson’s bad girl side on screen?
