Movies like The Town, Bandits, and even the beginning of The Dark Knight are just examples of how gritty and action-packed bank robberies have been depicted on the big screen. Forgive my lack of knowledge of the film genre, but we can now add the upcoming comedy caper Flypaper to the list, starring Patrick Dempsey (Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon), Ashley Judd (Bug), and Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover Part II).
According to IMDB, the movie is about “A man caught in the middle of two simultaneous robberies at the same bank and desperately tries to protect the teller with whom he’s secretly in love.”
While this sums up the story nicely, the trailer reveals that there’s a lot more action and comedy to be had. Especially since Dr. McDreamy himself, Dempsey (if you watch Grey’s Anatomy, you know what I mean), is expanding his resume for the big screen in an action / comedy role. It’s also nice to see Judd back in a major way since the less than challenging role that she played starring opposite Dwight “The Rock” Johnson in The Tooth Fairy last year.
Also appearing in the film are a slew of supporting actors who help bring on the big laughs, including Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), Mekhi Phifer (8 Mile), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Leaves of Grass), Curtis Armstrong (Dan Vs.), and Octavia Spencer (The Help). Also, some recognizable faces added to the mix are Rob Huebel (Children‘s Hospital), John Ventimiglia (The Sopranos), and Adrian Martinez (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).
Dempsey recently announced that this coming season of the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy would be his last. Tear. And perhaps with this film, as well as the recently released Transformers 3 under his belt, we could see more from him aside from the rom-coms like Enchanted and Maid of Honor.
Under the direction of Rob Minkoff, who is best known for his animated projects including The Lion King and Stuart Little, it’s interesting to see how he can bring the script to life, written by the masterminds behind The Hangover, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.
On a side note: As a current employee of a financial institution, the subject of a robbery is not too foreign. However I’m hoping that with this film, starring two very household names like Dempsey and Judd, moviegoers take the portrayal as a form of escapism, something to be entertained by, and don’t get any crazy ideas with their buddies. While there seems to be bloodshed, unlikely romance, and a good deal of action, perhaps we can anticipate a well-packaged happily ever after because all signs point to that in the trailer.
Flypaper open on August 19th. Do you buy Dempsey in a role like this? What’s your favorite bank robbery movie? Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think!
