Matthew McConaughey will continue his recent career revival in his upcoming film the Dallas Buyers Club, which sees an unrecognizable McConaughey as he transforms his usual well trimmed frame to a very skinny, frail looking figure.
Although early days, suggestions are being made that McConaughey could be tipped for an Oscar nomination for the role, which sees him play Ron Woodroof, a Texan man who was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 and given 30 days to live. Determined to take control and defy the odds, Woodroof began smuggling alternative medicines not yet approved in the US to help fight the illness. He began distributing it to other sufferers which began the Dallas Buyers Club, and many others throughout the country, while all the time battling pharmaceutical companies.
A very real, and very inspiring story, it’s not hard to see why there’s already a buzz around this film which also stars an equally unrecognizable Jared Leto as transvestite prostitute Rayon, who helped set up the buyers club with Woodroof, and Jennifer Garner as Woodroof’s Doctor.
Dallas Buyers Club hits cinemas in the US on November 1st, take a look at the trailer below.
Matthew McConaughey stars in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and the U.S. was divided over how to combat the virus. Ron, now shunned and ostracized by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, the entrepreneurial Woodroof joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts – who he once would have shunned – and established a hugely successful “buyers’ club.” Their shared struggle for dignity and acceptance is a uniquely American story of the transformative power of resilience.
