Director Terrence Malick took a six-year hiatus from films during The New World and The Tree of Life, but now he is wrangling up the top names in Hollywood for back-to-back films, including To the Wonder.
The movie follows a couple Neil and Marina, played by Ben Affleck (Argo) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) respectively, who fall in love in France and return to Oklahoma together. Neil rekindles his relationship with a childhood sweetheart Jane, portrayed by Rachel McAdams (The Vow), and Marina meets Javier Bardem’s (Skyfall) character, who is a priest in exile.
In the new trailer for To the Wonder, these plot details aren’t necessarily obvious to the average viewer. However, Malick shares this sweeping epic with an omnipotent voice-over by Bardem about all the different ways that love enters our lives. The trailer for this film is both alluring and ambiguous, enforcing a cinematic philosophy that Malick relies on to protect the artistry behind his vision, while also inviting the audience to explore the raw and vulnerable side to the beauty of love.
Due out in theaters on April 12th, Malick is likely to see more critical success for this film, beyond the accolades from last year’s Venice Film Festival.
Do you want to go see this film? Do you think Malick is too far out of the box? What do you think of Affleck paired with Kurylenko and McAdams?
