The other day one of my buddies sent over a trailer for this little time travel, Hollywood studio satire called Flashback and, like the good guy I am, I watched it. After viewing the trailer I thought to myself, what the hell was that. I saw cheap effects, bad acitng, and just a movie that I would probably pass on if given the opportunity to watch it. Then I decided to take the film in its proper context and examining how the film was made.
Flashback, directed by Brendan Rogers, is “an achievement in grassroots filmmaking,” that is for sure. For the extent of the effects work, the trailer is actually pretty impressive when you think about it. The film pays homage, or makes fun of, so many different movies and the whole studio system itself that it’s hard not to give these guys some credit when you look at how much time they invested in the visuals of the film. Did I mention this movie was made by three guys literally working out of their garage? Tack that tidbit on and you might end up giving some props to these guys, although I still think the acting is miserable for what I’ve seen thus far. Check out the trailer and synopsis below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
Synopsis:
Flashback Films, a once-proud 32nd century movie studio, has fallen into disrepair thanks to a sinister corporate takeover. A prop-collecting Time Machine is the studio’s latest gimmick. When one janitor’s attempts to date a leading lady collide with the machinations of a corrupt studio executive, the entire studio is plunged into chaos.
