The first international trailer for Great Expectations directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) has hit the web, German subtitles and all! The classic novel by Victorian-era genius Charles Dickens has been brought to the big screen once again with all of the dark, thrilling goods that previous filmmakers have merely attempted to reproduce.
The film stars Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Pip, Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) as Estella, Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables) as Miss Havisham, Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall) as Magwitch, and Jason Flemyng (X-Men: First Class) as Joe.
For those of you who don’t know the story (shame on you, so read the book), the trailer will surely give away all the important plot details for the young orphan, Pip, who moves up the ranks of society as gentleman with the help of an unknown benefactor. Of course, there’s plenty of drama to endure when the old Miss Havisham dangles her precious and beautiful Estella before Pip and their childhood love, or lack thereof, ping pongs all over London and into the swamps of the countryside with deceit.
With a title like Great Expectations, One Day scribe David Nicholls has some big shoes to fill in making this a memorable reimagining of the highly acclaimed novel, especially when the 1998 reinvention which starred Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow was a shallow cry the mimicked Dickens’ central plot.
Take a look at the trailer below and see for yourself if the title bares any weight against the period drama. The film is set for a November 30th release, but there is no word yet when it will premiere stateside. Are you looking forward to seeing this movie? Do you like the casting for these iconic characters? Are you tired of seeing the same old stories remade for the big screen?
