After Tim Burton‘s reimagining of Alice in Wonderland became the second highest-grossing film of 2010 there was no doubt that Hollywood would go on to deliver legions of reimaginings of the type of classic fairy tales that inspired Alice in Wonderland. So not only do we have two Snow White films in development, two television shows “updating” classic fairy tales (both blatantly ripped off the brilliant comic series Fables, by the way), but now we also have Jack the Giant Killer from director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men). Of course, Singer started planning this film before Alice in Wonderland hit theaters, but New Line didn’t seem to get serious about until Burton’s film was making huge money.
Jack the Giant Killer stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as the titular hero in a reinvention of the classic fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. The trailer doesn’t look so bad, but I can’t say it excites me for any other reason than Singer is directing it and the script was co-written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, the upcoming Wolverine sequel).
Check out the trailer and the official press release below:
“Jack the Giant Killer” tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend–and gets the chance to become a legend himself.
