Normally, I wouldn’t dare to write about a Zac Efron movie, unless it had some quality star power behind it, and the draw would have to be that there’s serious potential for it to be a successful film; however, after seeing the trailer for Nicholas Sparks’ latest adaptation for The Lucky One, I’ve changed my mind! Aside from the fact that the former High School Musical star has turned into some major man candy here, Sparks has done it again with another heart-wrenchingly intense melodrama romance. It’s never too soon to ask… when did Zac Efron, cornball heartthrob of Hairspray, grow up?
The Lucky One also stars Taylor Schilling (TV‘s Mercy), Blythe Danner (Little Fockers), and Jay R. Ferguson (The Killer Inside Me). Two-time Oscar nominee Scott Hicks (Shine) directs the movie, based on the screenplay adapted by Remember Me scribe, Will Fetters.
The story follows “a Marine [who] travels to North Carolina after serving three tours in Iraq and searches for the unknown woman he believes was his good luck charm during the war,” according to IMDB. Efron plays said Marine, and Schilling is the object of his affection, leaving audiences wondering why he just doesn’t tell her his deal to begin with!
After reaching blockbuster heights in the romance flick genre with The Notebook back in 2004, the Sparks-inspired movies haven’t quite surpassed the precedent of the now-classic Ryan Gosling-Rachel McAdams tryst. A Walk to Remember (which was before The Notebook), Dear John, and Nights In Rodanthe were beautifully epic tear-jerkers, but they left me with the somber ache of wondering why there are no happy endings anymore. I didn’t even bother with The Last Song just because it was written as a vehicle to propel Miley Cyrus’ movie career.
Take a look at the trailer below for the movie which comes out April 20th 2012. Girlfriends everywhere will be dragging their boyfriends along, and single hopeless romantics like myself will perhaps wait until it’s available on cable to suffer through in the privacy of my own home with a bottle of wine and brand spanking new box of Kleenex that will erase any signs of a sob-fest.
Are you a fan of the Sparks novels and movies? Are you excited to see this movie? Do you think Efron is a good leading man for the part?
