Over the last decade Disney has periodically mined the world of sports for real-life uplifting stories to turn into films, like Miracle (2004), Glory Road (2006), Secretariat (2010), and Million Dollar Arm (2013). That continues with Disney’s next inspirational sports film that is based on a true story, McFarland USA, which stars Kevin Costner as Jim White, a P.E. teacher in 1987 at a predominantly Latino school who attempts to give his students direction by starting a cross-country team.
The trailer hits all the points you’d expect in an underdog sports movie, but in addition Coach White has to also hurdle the cultural differences. The fact that we don’t often see too many films about running is another touch that makes this film
McFarland, USA will be released on February 20 and stars Costner, Mario Bello, Morgan Saylor, Martha Higareda, Michael Aguero and Carlos Pratts and was directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider). Check out the trailer below:
