The official trailer for The Iron Lady debuted this week online and blogs everywhere are talking about Meryl Streep’s powerhouse performance as the revered Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher. The film focuses on the icon’s rise to power and ultimate price that she paid when finally earning it, in the face of political adversity.
Set for a January 13th 2012 release, the movie also stars Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2) as her husband Denis, Anthony Head (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), and Richard E. Grant (How To Stop Being A Loser). Surely with leads as accomplished as Streep and Broadbent more Academy award accolades aren’t too far away. In addition, Streep is reuniting with Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd for the film, which was written by Shame scribe Abi Morgan.
However, during a recent interview with The Daily Mail, Streep “explained how she admired Thatcher’s willingness to stand and be leader, a decision which meant she had to offer her life, and her family’s, ‘on an altar’ to the public good.” Also, the two-time Oscar winner and fourteen-time nominee reveals that playing Thatcher was biggest role of her career. That’s quite the statement when Streep’s previous acclaimed roles with in such hits like Julie & Julia, Doubt, and The Devil Wears Prada.
Rumor has it that the movie has a very The King’s Speech feel, but also there’s enough action and drama for the movie to attract a wide range of audiences. Streep puts up some steep competition for young actresses like Michelle Williams, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Olsen, and Kirsten Dunst who are also speculated to be favorites for the golden statue.
