Maybe some of you don’t know who Kathleen Turner is, but if you’re a child of the 1980s, then you’ll know movies like War of the Roses, Peggy Sue Got Married, and V.I. Warshawski. The Academy Award nominee is returning to the big screen in a big way with the comedy The Perfect Family, which also stars Richard Chamberlain (I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry), Emily Deschanel (Bones), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), and Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue).
A suburban mother and devout Catholic, Eileen Cleary has always kept up appearances. When she runs for the Catholic Woman of the Year title at her local parish-an award she has coveted for years-her final test is introducing her family to the board for the seal of approval. Now she must finally face the nonconformist family she has been glossing over for years. Her gay daughter, Shannon (Emily Deschanel), a successful lawyer, is about to marry her life partner Angela (Angelique Cabral). Her unhappily married son Frank Jr. (Jason Ritter) is cheating on his wife with the local manicurist. And Eileen’s own marriage to a recovered alcoholic is pulling at the seams.
This looks to be the grown up version of the 2004 comedy / drama Saved!, in a similar portrayal of how all the rules of being a good Catholic are flawed given the circumstances of modern day society.
Under the direction of Anne Renton (Love is Love) the movie seems to touch on all of those comedic and dramatic moments that truly capture the family of today. It’s also a surprise to see so many of these familiar faces from television on the big screen.
The movie is in theaters May 4th, so think about the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday and make plans to see it! Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think!
