Park Chan-Wook, one of my favorite directors and the man behind the legendary Vengeance Trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance), and his brother Park Chan Kyong have made a 30 minute “fantasy-horror” film called Paranmanjang , or Ups and Downs, a short which was shot entirely on the new iPhone 4.
Chan-Wook is one of the most stylistic directors aroud and his new film looks just as unique and disturbing as some of his other feature length ones. After the jump you will find that, despite being shot on a phone, the entire filming process was just as expansive as feature film and will amaze your eyes when you see how it was made. Hit the jump to check out both videos and to find out what the movie is about.
After screening the film to about 100 reporters, including The Wall Street Journal, the director had this to say about the process:
“From hunting for a film location, shooting auditions, to doing a documentary on the filming process, everything was shot with the iPhone 4. We went through all the same film-making processes except that the camera was small.”
The film cost around $130,000 to make and was partially funded by the exclusive Korean iPhone distributor, KT Corp which means that we Americans are bound to see the film eventually.
Ups and Downs stars Oh Kwang-rok and Lee Jung Hyun and will receive a limited theatrical run in Korean theaters beginning January 27th. Hopefully it reaches America soon but for now, scroll down and be amazed at how a suspenseful movie can be made with a measly little phone.
Synopsis:
…a fantastical tale that begins with a middle-aged man fishing one afternoon and then, hours later at night, catches the body of a woman. The panicked man tries to undo the intertwined fishing line, but he gets more and more entangled. He faints, then wakes up to find himself in the white clothes that the woman was wearing. The movie’s point of view then shifts to the woman and it becomes a tale of life and death from a traditional Korean point of view.
