Steve McQueen‘s Shame was one of my favorite movies of 2012 and was the film that put him on my radar. Though I haven’t seen his prior film Hunger, I’ve been eagerly awaiting his follow-up film 12 Years a Slave, a true story about a black man named Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who was a free man living in NY who was then kidnapped and sold into slavery. Now only does this seem like a powerful story and perfect for McQueen’s effective directorial hand, but the power house cast behind it should be all the convincing you need to give this Oscar contender a viewing.
Who is in it you ask? Well, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry, Quvenzhane Wallis, Lupita Nyongo, Scoot McNairy, Michael Kenneth Williams and Garret Dillahunt star.
The first trailer for the film has hit and it is a powerful one. Of all the big movies coming out in December I’m most excited for this one, it looks like it’s going to rock some worlds in an intense and emotional way. 12 Years a Slave is set to release on December 27th so check out the trailer and synopsis below and get ready for its arrival.
12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.
