Not that I ever doubted it wouldn’t be good, but so far SXSW 2013 is shaping up to feature a ton of awesome indie films that are taking me by surprise. The latest potential gem to release a trailer before the fest is director and co-screenwriter Jonathan Singer-Vine’s feature debut, Licks. The film is an honest and seemingly authentic portrayal about a young guy in Oakland who was just released from prison as he battles the harsh realities of returning to the world that sent him to prison in the first place. Basically, it sound like the story of Cutty from The Wire except as a twenty something. Either way, the trailer looks pretty good and, as a result, I have added this movie to my watch list for when I attend the festival as I think it’s going to be a winner in my book.
LICKS follows the story of a young man, D, as he returns to his Oakland neighborhood after two years served in prison for a robbery gone wrong. In the days after his release, we are taken into D’s world while he navigates the harsh realities that plague his inner city community. His judgment is tested by the insidious influences around him, forcing D to decide what direction to take his life.
Licks stars Stanley “Doe” Hunt, Koran Jenkins, Tatiana Monet, Devon Libran, Les “DJ Upgrade” Aderibigbe, John Stallings, Skipper Elekwachi, Santiago Pratt, Ava Reina, and Theresa Anderson-Downs
