At this year’s South by Southwest festival, one of my favorite films of the fest and an unexpectedly gem was Vincent Grashaw‘s directorial debut, Coldwater, a thriller about life inside a juvenile rehabilitation camps.
The film follows a teenager, named Brad Lunders (P.J. Boudousqué), who is sent to a wilderness rehabilitation where he is forced to endure the harsh, gritty conditions of a prison like boot camp. Not very fond of authority, Brad is determined to not let the system break him and seeks out a way to expose the torturous realities of the camp to the outside world.
Today, the first trailer for the film was released and it does an excellent job of showcasing the brutality of the film and what you can expect from it on that front. In some respects it shows a little too much of it, giving us glimpses at a lot of the good scenes, but at the same time that’s what the purpose of the film is, to highlight how dangerous some of the “rehabilitation camps” can be. Grashaw created a fictional piece of work based on the stories and cases from these types of centers around the country. The people that run some of these places say they’re “in the business of transformation” but after watching the trailer and the movie you might realize that isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Check out the first trailer below and be sure to read my review if you want to learn more about the film or check out some of my interviews with the director and star and another star and the producer.
