Well, here we are. The trailer for The Beaver, 2011’s quirkiest and most controversial movie thus far, featuring director/star Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson, is (drum roll please)… quite good, actually. Hit more for my thoughts and to check it out for yourself.
Gibson certainly hasn’t played a role like this before, so it’s fascinating to see him deal with mental illness on screen. The true praise, however, should go to Foster, who could have gone the easy route by taking a film with a concept that could easily be done as a zany kid’s movie (probably starring Robin Williams in full-on Flubber mode) and approaching it in a serious manner. By the way, anyone else think that Gibson‘s beaver voice sounds like an Australian Michael Caine?
Now, whether or not people will SEE the film is another question. But as I’ve said in previous posts on Gibson, if people are willing to continue to watch films directed by Roman Polanski, I think many will be willing to give this undeniably intriguing film a shot. It’s a shame too, since the film will never be solely judged on its own merit.
After checking out the trailer, let us know your thoughts in the comments.
