There’s nothing better than a Woody Allen movie set in Europe. Of course his New York-based films are clever, intelligent, and entertaining, but after the success the Midnight in Paris, Allen has set the bar even higher for himself with his latest romp across the pond with To Rome with Love.
The movie stars an impressive ensemble which includes Allen himself, who hasn’t been seen on screen since Scoop in 2006, Judy Davis (Marie Antoinette), Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Ellen Paige (Inception), Greta Gerwig (Damsels in Distress), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and Oscar-winning actor Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful).
The film radiates Allen’s no-fail formula consisting “of four vignettes, one of which a husband (Allen) and his wife (Davis) travel to Rome and meet the family of the Italian man their daughter is going to marry. Another of the vignettes will feature Benigni as a man named Leopoldo who gets mistaken for a movie star. A third segment will feature Baldwin as an architect from California visiting Rome with his friends. In a fourth segment two newlyweds go to Rome in order to visit some relatives but instead get lost in the city.”
The tone of the film seems to follows in the footsteps of other recent Allen gems like Midnight in Paris, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Scoop, and a mid-90s favorite of mine, Everyone Says I Love You.
There are a lot of reasons to be excited about this movie. Not only is the always-delightful Cruz a pleasure to watch on screen, but after her Academy-award winning performance in her last Allen-film, it’s interesting to watch her comedic side shine. In addition, there’s the dynamic of Eisenberg and Page in a should-they-or-shouldn’t-they tryst. And of course, seeing Benigni again on the big screen is possibly what I’m looking forward to the most since his all-around flawless performance in Life is Beautiful ranks as one of my favorite movies of all time.
To Rome with Love is set for an April 22nd release in Italy, followed by a June 22nd stateside premiere. Check out the trailer below to see all the action, romance, and comedy gold that Allen has created one again!
