Before seeing this documentary, I had now idea what or who Klitschko referred to. If you’re into sports, you probably already know. Klitschko is the last name of the two brothers, Vitali and Wladimir, who both became heavyweight champions of the world in boxing. Crazy, right? Their story is fascinating, as most sports stories are, but theirs has the unique quality of being more about the sport, than about making it big or making money. Sebastian Dehnhardt directs his first feature film and through actual boxing footage and interviews, gives the inside scoop on this very brutal sport.
Although I found the story very compelling, I thought there were several parts of the film that seemed out of place. There was too much time spent on their father and his time at Chernoybl (or maybe this is to hint that these guys are superhuman). The story derailed a little there. Also, Vitali, the older brother, seemed more comfortable on camera, so he was given more screen time which made it a bit uneven.
What I enjoyed about the film was they these two brothers seem so alike on the surface, but are completely different as fighters. They are both very smart and just enjoy the sport of boxing.
Klitschko is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival Tuesday 4/26, Thursday 4/28 and Saturday 4/30.
Rating: Drags a little, but enjoyable not only for sports fans. 5/10
