On April 21, I had the opportunity to speak with Alexandra McGuiness (writer/director) and Antonia Campbell-Hughes (actress playing Alice) of Lotus Eaters.
The quality is not the best (thanks at&t), but they each give a very interesting perspective on the film.
Synopsis
The bright young things of London’s social elite lead an existence as languorous and lavish as it is self-destructive. At the centre is Alice, a stunning ex-model unable to keep up with the high standards of living her peers feverishly chase. Alexandra McGuinness‘ directorial debut presents a contemporary black-and-white portrait of overlapping cliques of friends struggling to get their lives under control before they fall numb to it all.
Director’s Statement:
My original idea for Lotus Eaters was to make a film that showed both the highs and the hangovers and the hopes that people cling to even while everything is twirling out of control.
As Jonathan Franzen said of Paula Fox’s novel “Desperate Parties” (one of the inspirations for the script), “Full of people utterly unknown to themselves at brilliant parties you’re grateful not to have been invited to.”
